Airplane James’ “Road To ES3 Mixtape” is a culturally resonant body of work that blends
nostalgic elements of old school gangsta rap with modern influences. The mixtape opens with a
compelling introduction by Justin Credible, setting the tone for a project that is both
introspective and legacy driven.
A standout track is “Asphalt Challenge” featuring Ralfy The Plug. This energetic and catchy
song embodies a distinct Los Angeles sound that’s suitable for the gym, car rides, or a party.
Ralfy The Plug’s feature further solidifies its era defining quality.
“Love Language” evokes nostalgia by sampling Lucy Pearl’s “Dance Tonight,” its reminiscent
of something you’d hear at barbecues or skating rinks. The lighthearted lyricism, with James
expressing a desire to dance and have a good time while staying prepared for any situation, adds
to its upbeat and melodic nature, seamlessly transitioning into the next track, “Identity.”
“Identity” serves as a feel good track, addressing themes like gang violence, adolescence,
overcoming challenges, and personal growth. James reflects on how his experiences have shaped
his identity, delivering a positive message that resonates across diverse audiences.
“Legendary” featuring Sean Ev is a banger that celebrates accomplishments, wealth, and status.
It’s nice to get to the end of the project and listen to something that’s both affirmative and
boastful in contrast to earlier tracks that touch on raw topics such as poverty and gang
associations. This progression allows listeners to witness the artist’s journey and success
unfolding in real time.
The mixtape concludes powerfully with “700 Tears” featuring Glasses Malone. This track
emphasizes the importance of being the change one wishes to see and not letting adversity hinder
the pursuit of goals. Overall, “Road To ES3 Mixtape” reflects the harsh realities of James’
upbringing, including poverty, gang violence, and grief. Despite these challenges, the
overarching message is to rise above.
